How to add text to a photo
Making text easy to read on a photo
The most common problem with text on images is that it disappears into a busy background. Three styles solve that:
- Outline — a dark edge around light letters (the classic meme look). Readable on any background.
- Shadow — a soft glow behind the letters. Subtler and more elegant, great for quotes.
- Label — the text sits on a solid box, like a sticker. Ideal for headlines, prices and announcements.
Place text over calm areas — sky, walls, the edge of the frame — rather than over faces. Keep captions short; on a phone screen, five to eight words are about the limit people will read.
Choosing a font
Anton and Bebas Neue are bold and condensed, perfect for memes, thumbnails and headlines. DM Sans is clean and modern for everyday captions. Playfair and Newsreader add elegance for quotes and invitations, while Pacifico gives a friendly handwritten feel. Stick to one or two fonts per image.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add more than one text?
Yes. Press "+ Add text box" as many times as you like. Click any text on the picture to select and edit it.
How do I make a meme?
Press "Meme style (top + bottom)". You'll get two captions in the classic bold white-with-black-outline style. Click each one and type your words.
Is my image uploaded?
No. The text is drawn onto your picture inside your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
Can I write on multiple lines?
Yes — press Enter in the Text field to start a new line.
Can I add a logo too?
For logos, use our watermark tool, which can place an image on your photo.
