How to convert HEIC to JPG
It takes three steps and works on any computer or phone with a modern browser:
What is a HEIC file?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the format iPhones and iPads have used for photos since iOS 11. It keeps the same quality as a JPG at roughly half the file size, which saves a lot of storage. The downside is compatibility: Windows needs an extra codec to open HEIC files, many websites refuse them in upload forms, and lots of apps and older phones can't display them.
JPG or PNG — which should I choose?
JPG is the right choice almost every time. It's the universal format for photos, supported by every device, website and app, and at 90% quality it looks the same as the original. PNG is lossless, so nothing at all is lost, but files are much bigger (often 5–10× a JPG). Choose PNG only if you plan to keep editing the image in a design program.
How to stop your iPhone saving HEIC
If you'd rather your iPhone took JPG photos from now on, open Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible. You can also keep HEIC on the phone but have it convert automatically when copying to a computer: Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic.
Private by design
Most HEIC converters upload your photos to a server. Here the conversion runs inside your browser, so personal photos never leave your device. The converter itself (about 1.3 MB) downloads once the first time you use it.
Frequently asked questions
Is this HEIC converter free?
Yes, completely. There's no limit on the number of photos, no watermark and no signup.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The conversion happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your photos are never sent to a server.
Will I lose quality converting HEIC to JPG?
At the default 90% quality the difference is not visible. JPG files will be somewhat larger than the original HEIC because HEIC is a more efficient format. If you need zero loss, choose PNG.
How many photos can I convert at once?
There's no fixed limit. Very large batches (hundreds of photos) depend on your device's memory; if your browser slows down, convert them in groups of 50.
Does it keep the photo's location and date?
No — the converted files don't carry the original EXIF metadata such as GPS location or camera model. That's usually a privacy bonus. If you need to check a photo's hidden data, use our photo metadata tool.
Why is conversion slow on my phone?
HEIC decoding is demanding, and it's happening on your device rather than on a powerful server. A modern phone converts a typical photo in one to three seconds.
What about Live Photos?
A Live Photo is saved as a HEIC still image plus a short video. This tool converts the still image, which is what you'll want for sharing in nearly every case.
