How to crop an image
Which aspect ratio should I use?
- 1:1 (square) — profile pictures, Instagram and Facebook posts, marketplace listings.
- 4:5 (portrait) — takes up the most space in the Instagram feed, so posts get more attention.
- 16:9 (wide) — YouTube thumbnails, presentations, desktop wallpapers and website banners.
- 9:16 (tall) — stories, Reels, TikTok and phone wallpapers.
- 3:2 and 4:3 — classic photo-print shapes from cameras and phones.
Cropping vs. resizing
Cropping cuts away part of the picture to change its shape or remove distractions. Resizing scales the whole picture up or down without removing anything. If you need a square image but don't want to lose any of the photo, use Fit to Square instead, which adds a background around it. To change the pixel size of an image, use our resize tool.
Composition tips
Use the grid inside the crop box: placing the main subject where the lines cross (the "rule of thirds") usually looks more natural than putting it dead centre. Leave a little space in the direction a person is looking, and keep horizons straight — use Rotate if the photo is sideways.
Frequently asked questions
Does cropping reduce image quality?
No. Free and ratio crops keep the original pixels at full resolution. Only when you choose an exact platform size is the result scaled to those dimensions.
Is my image uploaded?
No. Cropping happens in your browser and the image never leaves your device.
Can I crop on my phone?
Yes. Drag the box with one finger and pull the corner handles to resize it.
Can I crop into a circle?
Not yet. Crop to a 1:1 square — most sites, such as social networks, display profile pictures as circles automatically.
What format is the cropped image saved in?
The same format as your original: PNG stays PNG (keeping transparency), and JPG or WebP photos are saved as high-quality files.
