Make a photo square without cropping

Instagram, WhatsApp and many apps cut off the edges of tall or wide photos. Fit the whole picture into a square (or 4:5, or 9:16) with a neat background instead.

Why do apps crop my photos?

Many feeds and profile slots have a fixed shape. Instagram, for example, shows posts between 1.91:1 (landscape) and 4:5 (portrait); anything taller gets cut. WhatsApp and many marketplaces crop thumbnails to squares, and profile pictures are always square or round. Adding a background around your photo — sometimes called "letterboxing" or "padding" — means the app has nothing to cut off.

Blurred or solid background?

A blurred background is made from an enlarged, softened copy of your own photo, so the colours always match and the result looks seamless. A solid colour gives a clean, gallery-like border: white is classic, black feels dramatic, and a brand colour keeps a business feed consistent.

Which shape for which platform?

  • 1:1 — Instagram and Facebook posts, WhatsApp, profile pictures, marketplace listings.
  • 4:5 — the tallest shape Instagram allows in the feed; it takes up more screen space.
  • 9:16 — Instagram and Facebook stories, Reels covers, TikTok and WhatsApp status.
  • 16:9 — YouTube, presentations and X (Twitter) posts that show in full.

Frequently asked questions

Will my photo lose quality?

No. The photo is placed at its full resolution (up to 4000 pixels) and saved as a high-quality JPG, or PNG if your original was a PNG.

What size is the downloaded image?

It's based on your photo's longest side, with a minimum of 1080 pixels on the shortest side — the size Instagram recommends.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Everything happens inside your browser. Your photo never leaves your device.

Can I crop instead?

Yes — if you'd rather cut the edges off, use our crop tool with the Square 1:1 setting.
